The Herring Belles & Beaux Ski Club is composed of a group of cross-country ski and snowshoe enthusiasts who rent a bus on Wednesdays during January and February to go to a variety of cross-country ski destinations in Southern Ontario.
The club has been in operation for approximately 30 years.
Buses depart from the Toronto Botanical Gardens (Edwards Gardens) Leslie parking lot at the southwest corner of Lawrence and Leslie promptly at 9:00 a.m., returning there at approximately 4:30 p.m.
Membership has two levels and guests are also welcome. ‘Regular’ membership entitles the member to all bus trips (up to six) during the season. ‘Spare’ membership covers three trips. Spares who have used their three trips have the option to go as guests on one additional trip. Guests are limited to one trip and pay on the bus.
Organizers attempt to run six trips out of the available eight or nine Wednesdays in January and February. Circumstances such as too much snow (roads impassable) or too little snow (no skiing available within reach) have occasionally caused cancellation of one or more Wednesday trips — but we usually succeed in running all six trips.
For January-February 2019:
- Regular membership costs $150
- Spare membership costs $125
- Guest fee is $40
The deadline for signing up is November 23, 2018.
These fees cover transportation (and club insurance) only. Organizers can usually negotiate group rates for trail fees; these fees are collected on the bus, as are guest fees.
Most destinations have some sort of lunch facilities, but to be safe, you might want to bring your own snack. We attempt to notify members of the intended destination on our website before each trip to reduce this uncertainty. Members register for email notifications on the website.
Also, many of the destinations rent skis, boots and snowshoes to those requiring them. Indeed, snowshoeing is usually an option, and is becoming increasingly popular.
All participants need to fill out and sign a consent form at least once per season, to satisfy our insurance requirements. The Membership form is on the Join Us page.
