No skiing tomorrow

Happy New Year Herringbelles and -beaux !!
What a start to the 2019 season !  The snow gods have let us down,  the conditions are not good enough at Highlands Nordic or Scenic Caves and the forecast is unpredictable at best.  In short, it has been advisable to cancel tomorrow’s trip.
This means the addition of February 20 to the schedule. Stay hopeful, keep on snow-dancing and check this website regularly for future updates to help the phoners with their job of informing the members on their list.
Stay tuned for next week’s developments…….
Some people are enjoying the bare, dry roads, but I’m singing “let it snow, let it snow, let it snow”.    ☃☃☃  Best regards, Christa

No trip this Wednesday

Hello Herring Belles & Beaux,

Since the weather gods are not with us, we will have to cancel for tomorrow. Highlands Nordic is closed today with no great improvement expected for Wednesday. They are even asking for the snow dance on their website (sadly there is no insurance coverage for no-snow closures).

Let us remain hopeful for next Wednesday, party day at Scenic Caves. We will keep our eyes on the long-range forecast and plan accordingly.

Have a good week and keep fit by dancing, Christa

Stay tuned about Wednesday

Hello Herring Belles & Beaux,

There was nothing good on the weather front this morning !

The plan was and still is to go to Duntroon,  but we’re holding off on the final decision until we see how tomorrow’s rain impacts the trails at Highlands Nordic. ($14/$10)

Stay tuned… the snow dance 🎿🎿🎿🎿🎿

Season 2018 about to begin!

Greetings Herring Belles & Beaux,

The committee of membership secretary Mary, treasurer Hedi, webmaster Gary and I have been hard at work to ensure that we have another splendid ski and snowshoe season to enjoy.

The first outing Is scheduled for Wednesday, January 3, 2018.  Like last year,  the bus will leave promptly at 9 a.m. from the parking lot at the Toronto Botanical Gardens on the southwest corner of Lawrence and Leslie.  Please use the east end of the lot (away from the TBG buildings)  and avoid parking near the lot’s outside perimeter.  Parking is again free of charge when you display your pass.

Depending on weather and snow conditions, we will have five Wednesday trips in January and one in February with the possibility of adding another one or two if there is enough interest.

I look forward to seeing you all on the trails and am hoping for a fantastic season of snow with no cancellations !!  That’s asking a lot, but I have been doing the snow dance…. Have you ?

Happy holidays from all of us,
Christa Naylor  (Co-ordinator),
Mary, Hedi and Gary

Get ready to kick and glide

Greetings, Herringbelles members – both Belles and Beaux.

The unusually beautiful summer is a distant memory as the weekend’s snowfall reminds us of the wonderful ski season to come. (This is not what Gary and I were thinking as we made our way back to Canada via Pearson airport two nights ago !)

Since skiing makes winter special for all of us, let’s embrace it and celebrate a warm welcome back for all returning and new Herringbelles members. The buses are ordered for Jan. 11, 18, 25, Feb. 1, 8, 15 with Feb. 22 and Mar. 1 as spare dates in case of weather cancellations. Parking is arranged free of charge in the east lot at the Toronto Botanical Gardens at Lawrence and Leslie.

As usual the bus will arrive around 8:30 a.m. and leave promptly at 9:00. Destinations are generally announced at the beginning of each week as they are very much dependent on the weather.

To date we have more than 40 full-time members, 8 spares and 1 “one time ” trial, which makes our finances viable for another season. Our phoners Catherine Pitt, Helga Thurow and Pam Roberts have again kindly volunteered to communicate with their assigned members, but will probably have less to do with increased use of emails and the website.

Please keep informed by checking the Herringbelles website so ably produced by webmaster Gary Schlee. In fact, if you have subscribed to the website (as most of you have), you will automatically receive an email notification indicating our destination a few days before each outing.

The transition to new treasurer Hedi Furrer and new membership secretary Mary Wilson  has been very smooth  as they have expertly handled their roles and made my job very easy.

A huge thank-you to all six volunteers mentioned above!!

Wishing you a very happy festive season and hoping for snowy, safe skiing,

Christa Naylor    (Co-ordinator – and parking attendant extraordinaire)

Season-end message from Christa

Hello Herringbelles and beaux !

snowflakeAnother great ski season has come to a close for us. With winter getting more unpredictable, we could almost start in February and continue into March! However, we’ll stick with the tried and true and hope for lots of snow in 2017.

Fortunately, we only had to cancel once on February 3 when rain and record warm temperatures made the trip to Horseshoe impossible.  Our other Wednesdays at Highlands Nordic, Horseshoe, Hardwood and Scenic Caves were all most enjoyable, with a particularly yummy party in the log cabin. There we also said our thank-yous to Sylvia and Russ who will be ably replaced by treasurer Hedi and membership secretary Mary. We are also grateful to our phoners Helga, Pam and Catherine who have agreed to stay on for another season.

Winter 2017 seems a long way off, but keep it in mind by reminding some of your friends to join us next year for great exercise on the trails. Be sure to check the website organized by Gary for all forthcoming details.  I remain co-ordinator for now and wish you a most wonderful summer,

A great 2015; now we wait for 2016

Hello Herring Belles and Beaux!

Sadly the 2015 Herring Belles and Beaux ski season has come to an end already. However, we’ve had six excellent outings, no cancellations, no injuries and a great closing party at Scenic Caves.

If you have enjoyed your skiing or snowshoeing, perhaps you will share it with friends next year. We can always accommodate more members and guests on the bus and would love to increase our numbers.

Members (and everyone else, too!) can watch this space next fall for info about joining us for the 2016 season. Those who have subscribed to the website will automatically get an email when we post the info, probably in October.

Phoners Helga, Pam and Catherine, the triumvirate of Christa, Sylvia and Russ, as well as webmaster Gary would all like to wish you a warm and wonderful summer. Don’t miss the sign-up date in November!

Best regards,  Christa
